Instagram head recommends using carousels to increase reach
Carousels can now contain up to 20 slides and musical accompaniment - that's the latest advice from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who has revealed some logical reasons why carousels are useful for increasing reach.
According to Mosseri:
‘Why do carousels often get more reach than photos? Two main reasons. Firstly, multiple media elements will lead to more interactions with your carousel posts, and more interactions on average contribute to more reach. Second, if someone sees your carousel post but doesn't click through, we often give that carousel a second chance and automatically show a second slide to the viewer.’
So carousels with multiple slides offer more opportunities for engagement, and more engagement means more reach. It makes quite a bit of sense, and now that carousels can contain even more frames, there are even more opportunities to engage with audiences.
As Mosseri added, carousels with music can now also appear in the Reels section, offering another opportunity to expand reach.
It's a good tip that is certainly already being used by many Instagram marketers. But if you're looking for a way to boost your IG presence, it's worth considering incorporating carousels into your strategy and seeing if it helps improve results.
Mosseri also emphasises that you shouldn't force yourself, but if you have the right materials and can develop a plan for your carousels, it's definitely worth considering.
Instagram has also recently added text overlays within carousel posts, as well as multi-format display, which allows you to include different image formats (such as portrait and square) in one set of carousels.
