Instagram has added a new option that allows you to cut elements from publications with still images, which can then be reused as stickers in your stories and videos.
Instagram's new "Create a Cutout Sticker" feature is available in a three-dot menu in any publicly published post with a still image. When you activate it, Instagram will identify the focus object in the image, which you can then save as a separate sticker.
You can then use that sticker in your stories and videos.
This is similar to the image cutout option that Meta also recently added to WhatsApp, and it can provide a number of new creative possibilities.
Although there are some limitations that may restrict use.
Firstly, most of your Instagram feed is probably now video clips, so actually finding publications with still images isn’t as easy as it was in the past.
To create a sticker from a post in your feed, the creator must also publish it publicly, and give other users permission to create clippings of their content. Users can turn this off and prevent people from reusing their images through their settings.
Additionally, if you create a clipped sticker from someone else's content and then that user deletes the original, you will also lose your sticker.
The creative potential of the innovation is pretty significant, and it will be interesting to see if people start using it and creating their own stickers.
